TV Wellness Guru Jillian Michaels Discusses Breaking Her Two Front Teeth

June 17, 2014 By thewsi

jillian-michaels2As America’s toughest trainer on the hit television program The Biggest Loser, Jillian Michaels helped people learn that they hold the power to change. And if anyone knows about the power of changing oneself, it is Jillian Michaels. In her recent interview with Dear Doctor magazine, Jillian discusses her childhood, the trauma of being overweight as a teenager (5′ 2″ and 175 pounds), and the day her life forever changed when she started martial arts training at a gym. “I started training when I was 17 and always loved it but never thought it would end up being my career,” she said.

Jillian also reveals that when she was a child, she broke her two front teeth and had them repaired with crowns. She added, “Now, I generally wear a mouthguard if I am doing anything where my teeth have any chance of being knocked out.”

When it comes to replacing teeth that are broken or damaged from trauma, or teeth that are damaged because of dental decay, grinding habits, or acid erosion, crowns may be your best option. And because the tooth enamel is damaged, a bit more of it must be removed before we can place a crown. Generally speaking, we must remove about 2 millimeters of tooth structure to place a crown. Once the crown is placed, the tooth will always require a crown, as this is an irreversible procedure. However, the good news is that a crown not only mimics the look and feel of a natural tooth, but it is also the optimal long-term solution. On average, a crown last between 5 and 15 years and requires no special maintenance. In fact, you should treat your crown as you do your natural teeth, with a daily cleaning regimen of brushing and flossing and routine dental examinations and cleanings.

Treating Chipped Teeth: A Common Sports Injury Among Kids

December 30, 2013 By thewsi

injuryOne went over the handlebars of his mountain bike. Another got an elbow going for a lay-up. For a third, it was that tricky maneuver on her new snowboard…

These are just a few of the ways that kids’ teeth can be injured. (No doubt, parents can think of plenty more.) The good news is that modern dentistry offers more options than ever for treating the injury and restoring the appearance and function of the teeth.

Teeth that are fractured or dislodged are a serious condition that requires immediate, comprehensive treatment. The majority of dental injuries, however, are less severe: most often, they involve chipped teeth. If chips occur in the upper front teeth — as some 80% of dental injuries do — even small flaws can have a big affect on the appearance. And, especially in the teenage years, appearance can mean everything.

In many cases, small chips in the teeth can be repaired effectively using a procedure called “bonding.” In this treatment, we use a tooth-colored material made by mixing a plastic matrix and a glass-like filler, which provides adequate strength and aesthetic qualities similar to the natural teeth. In fact, this composite material can be matched to an individual’s tooth color so accurately that it’s hard to notice any difference.

Composite resins can be successfully bonded to most healthy teeth — and they offer some advantages over other restoration methods, particularly for children and teenagers. The bonding procedure avoids making tiny “undercuts” in the natural substance of the tooth, while metal fillings need to “lock in” to the tooth’s structure. This means that bondings generally require less tooth preparation, which usually makes bonding a quick and relatively easy method of restoration.

It’s true that, over time, some bonded restorations may not stand up to the tremendous biting forces of the jaw as well as porcelain restorations — but in young people whose permanent teeth have large pulp (nerve) chambers, the removal of too much tooth structure could compromise the long-term health of the tooth. Later on, we can look at performing a different type of restoration.

If you have questions about cosmetic bonding or sports-related dental injuries, please contact us for a consultation.

Dr. Booth, Jennifer, Wendy and Linda are all such a wonderful team! They helped to take care of my oldest son with some orthodontics after a serious issue with an Odontoma and have been our regular family dentist for years on end. I wouldn’t trust my teeth to anyone else.Update:I am updating my review. Dr. Booth has retired from The Tooth Booth and left his practice in good hands with Dr. Sileewa. He is a kind, caring dentist who has delivered fantastic work for myself and my family. The hygienists are so nice and really put your mind at ease. I had a filling put in yesterday and my husband spoke to Dr. S. directly about making payments (split in two) so we can use our HSA. He said that would be totally fine. He even offered us a discount. As I was leaving, I spoke to Barb the office manager, and reminded her that we were given the option to make payments as well as offered a discount. I said I would call first thing in the morning (as our HSA would be reloaded) with the first payment. Barb very rudely said she would give me my walking bill and said she was giving us a 5% discount that we were not entitled to as we were not paying in full at one time nor the day of. I reminded her politely (again) that the doctor approved it. Barb decided that she didn't like that correction and proceeded to remind me of the office hours so that she, "Wouldn't have to chase us down for our payments." My husband has been with this office for 30 years. He's been coming since he was a boy and nobody from the office has ever had to chase him down (nor his parents) for non-payment. I felt so embarrassed, humiliated, and quite frankly upset. What an awful comment to make to patients in fantastic standing let alone any client. I left and immediately called my husband. We decided that we would not be taking the discount (since we were not entitled to it) and that we would be leaving the office for good over this. This was not the first, second or even third time I have had an issue with Barb, but it was definitely the last time that I was going to allow her to speak to me in such a way. It is sad for us to move on as we liked Dr. Sileewa and the hygienists. We are sorry to lose them and to have to say goodbye over one person but unfortunately that's sometimes all it takes.

I have been a patient at The Tooth Booth for about 10 years now. While I always thought the prior Dentist did a good job, this new Dentist Dr. Nawar Sileewa has made The Tooth Booth now great! I would highly recommend. They also are very fair priced. While visiting make sure to give Jennifer a hard time. I always do! 🙂

Dr. Booth and his team are fabulous. He is a very knowledgeable Dentist and Orthodontist and takes time to explain what is going on in a manner you can understand and gives you treatment options. I continue to be impressed by his and his team’s level of customer service. From my child’s tooth extraction, teen’s ortho, family dental cleanings, toothaches and Grandma’s crown replacement.. I couldn’t be more pleased with the speed and flexibility of their patient care. I highly recommend Dr. Booth and his team.
