Braces: A Rite of Passage Even for Hollywood Kids

May 16, 2014 By thewsi

smithHer parents Will and Jada are Hollywood royalty, who helped her land her first acting role when she was 7. She released a hit single, “Whip My Hair,” before she had quite reached the age of 10; shortly afterward, she was signed to a record label. Yet the young singer and actress Willow Smith has at least one thing in common with plenty of ‘tweens and teens across America: She needed to wear braces to correct problems with the alignment of her teeth.

Why do braces seem to be a part of growing up for so many kids? One answer is because they work so well. Braces apply gentle pressure to the teeth through a thin, flexible wire called an archwire. Attached to the teeth with a metal or ceramic bracket, the archwire exerts a light force which causes teeth to gradually move into better positions. Sometimes, when additional force is needed, elastic bands or other appliances may be used in conjunction with braces.

Most everyone is familiar with the silvery metal “tracks” of traditional braces. But did you know that there are a number of other options too? For a more inconspicuous look, you may be able to have braces with tooth-colored ceramic brackets; then, only the thin archwire will be visible in your mouth. It’s even possible in some cases to place the metal wires and brackets on the tongue side of the teeth. With this system, called lingual braces, the orthodontic hardware is truly invisible.

What if you didn’t need metal braces at all? Some people can get good results using a system of clear plastic aligners instead of braces. The aligners are worn 23 hours a day, but can be taken off for cleaning and for important events. They work best for correcting mild or moderate alignment problems.

Still, plenty of people feel that if they’re going to wear braces, they might as well flaunt them. That’s why some types of braces are available with bands that come in different colors. When Willow’s brother Jayden wore braces, he was reported to favor red and black ones. Jayden, who is about two years older than his sister, had his braces removed just before Willow got hers put on.

So if it turns out that you need braces, remember that lots of your favorite celebrities wore them too. And keep in mind that, depending on your own situation, you may have several options to choose from.

Television Host Nancy O’Dell Provides Advice for New Mothers

April 9, 2014 By thewsi

nancy-o-dell2When her daughter Ashby was born in 2007, Nancy O’Dell was overjoyed; but she found the experience of pregnancy to be anxiety-provoking. O’Dell is host of the popular entertainment news show Entertainment Tonight.

After her baby was born she compiled her memories and thoughts into a book for first-time pregnant mothers. The book, “Full of Life: Mom to Mom Tips I Wish Someone Had Told Me When I Was Pregnant,” covers a wide range of topics — including oral health during pregnancy.

“While my dental health has always been relatively normal, pregnancy did cause me some concern about my teeth and gums. With my dentist’s advice and treatment, the few problems I had were minimized,” O’Dell told Dear Doctor magazine. An example of her experience is a craving for milk that started at about the time the baby’s teeth began to form. She felt that her body was telling her to consume more calcium.

As often happens with pregnant mothers, she developed sensitive gums and was diagnosed with “pregnancy gingivitis,” the result of hormonal changes that increase blood flow to the gums.

“I love to smile,” said O’Dell, “and smiles are so important to set people at ease, like when you walk into a room of people you don’t know. When you genuinely smile you’re able to dissolve that natural wall that exists between strangers.”

Matthew Lewis’s Metamorphosis

March 10, 2014 By thewsi

matthew-lewis2Remember Matthew Lewis? You’ve seen him in all of the Harry Potter movies, where he played the bumbling Neville Longbottom: a pudgy, teenage wizard-in-training whose teeth could best be described as… dodgy. We won’t spoil the movie by telling you what happens to him in the end — but in real life, let’s just say his awkward phase is over. Today, he looks more like a young Ryan Gosling. How did this transformation happen?

Well, in part it was some “Hollywood magic” that made his teeth look worse in the films than they really were. But Lewis acknowledges that he also had cosmetic dental work performed. If you’ve ever considered getting a smile makeover yourself, you may wonder: What kinds of “dental magic” might it take to change an awkward grin into a red-carpet smile? Here are a few of the treatments we might utilize.

Orthodontics
It’s possible to correct tooth crowding, protrusion, gaps between teeth, and many other bite problems with orthodontic appliances like braces or clear aligners. While some may think orthodontics is just for teens, that isn’t so — you’re never too old to get the smile you’ve always wanted! In fact, right now about one in five orthodontic patients is an adult.

Teeth Whitening
This is a popular (and surprisingly affordable) option that can effectively lighten your teeth by six shades or more. We can do in-office whitening for the fastest results, or prepare a take-home whitening kit with a custom-made tray to fit your teeth perfectly and a supply of the proper bleaching solution. How well it will work for you (and how long it will last) depends on various factors, including the original cause of the discoloration, and your preferences for foods and beverages (such as coffee or red wine) that may cause stains.

Porcelain Veneers
Sometimes, even professional bleaching isn’t enough to get the kind of permanent, “Hollywood white” smile you’d like; that’s where porcelain veneers come in. By placing a fingernail-thin layer of ceramic over the tooth’s enamel, veneers offer a permanent, pearly white finish that looks just like your natural teeth — only more dazzling! Veneers, long the first choice of celebrities, are gaining popularity with plenty of “regular” folks.

Tooth Restorations
This category covers a wide variety of different methods and materials — like cosmetic bonding, crowns, bridges, and dental implants — which we use to repair or replace teeth that are damaged or missing. Beginning with the simple repair of small chips or cracks with tooth-colored resins, we can progress to more permanent crown restorations when more of the tooth structure needs replacement. To restore missing teeth, we have the option of using the tried-and-true bridge — or, the current gold standard in tooth replacement: the lifelike, permanent dental implant.

Of course, this is just a bare outline of the many tools and techniques cosmetic dentistry offers. We would be happy to talk with you about which ones are right in your individual situation. Will a smile makeover land you a red-carpet role? Maybe… but one thing is for sure: It will help you get the smile youâ??ve always wanted.

Dr. Booth, Jennifer, Wendy and Linda are all such a wonderful team! They helped to take care of my oldest son with some orthodontics after a serious issue with an Odontoma and have been our regular family dentist for years on end. I wouldn’t trust my teeth to anyone else.Update:I am updating my review. Dr. Booth has retired from The Tooth Booth and left his practice in good hands with Dr. Sileewa. He is a kind, caring dentist who has delivered fantastic work for myself and my family. The hygienists are so nice and really put your mind at ease. I had a filling put in yesterday and my husband spoke to Dr. S. directly about making payments (split in two) so we can use our HSA. He said that would be totally fine. He even offered us a discount. As I was leaving, I spoke to Barb the office manager, and reminded her that we were given the option to make payments as well as offered a discount. I said I would call first thing in the morning (as our HSA would be reloaded) with the first payment. Barb very rudely said she would give me my walking bill and said she was giving us a 5% discount that we were not entitled to as we were not paying in full at one time nor the day of. I reminded her politely (again) that the doctor approved it. Barb decided that she didn't like that correction and proceeded to remind me of the office hours so that she, "Wouldn't have to chase us down for our payments." My husband has been with this office for 30 years. He's been coming since he was a boy and nobody from the office has ever had to chase him down (nor his parents) for non-payment. I felt so embarrassed, humiliated, and quite frankly upset. What an awful comment to make to patients in fantastic standing let alone any client. I left and immediately called my husband. We decided that we would not be taking the discount (since we were not entitled to it) and that we would be leaving the office for good over this. This was not the first, second or even third time I have had an issue with Barb, but it was definitely the last time that I was going to allow her to speak to me in such a way. It is sad for us to move on as we liked Dr. Sileewa and the hygienists. We are sorry to lose them and to have to say goodbye over one person but unfortunately that's sometimes all it takes.

I have been a patient at The Tooth Booth for about 10 years now. While I always thought the prior Dentist did a good job, this new Dentist Dr. Nawar Sileewa has made The Tooth Booth now great! I would highly recommend. They also are very fair priced. While visiting make sure to give Jennifer a hard time. I always do! 🙂

Dr. Booth and his team are fabulous. He is a very knowledgeable Dentist and Orthodontist and takes time to explain what is going on in a manner you can understand and gives you treatment options. I continue to be impressed by his and his team’s level of customer service. From my child’s tooth extraction, teen’s ortho, family dental cleanings, toothaches and Grandma’s crown replacement.. I couldn’t be more pleased with the speed and flexibility of their patient care. I highly recommend Dr. Booth and his team.
