The Dentures Are Coming!

March 5, 2015 By thewsi

revere How much do you really know about Revolutionary War hero and famous disturber-of-the-peace Paul Revere? Take this quiz and find out! True or False:

  • Paul Revere cried “The British are coming!”
  • Paul Revere rode to Concord, Massachusetts.
  • Paul Revere practiced dentistry.

The first two answers are false: Revere, like most colonists, considered himself British at the time (but might have said “the regulars” are coming); and he never made it as far as Concord, though one of his midnight-riding companions did. The last statement, however, is true: When things got slow in his regular trade of silversmithing, Revere hung out a shingle to broadcast his skills as a dentist.

“Paul Revere can fix [teeth] as well as any surgeon dentist who ever came from London, he fixes [dentures] in such a manner that they are not only an ornament but of real use in speaking and eating,” his advertisement in a Boston newspaper is supposed to have read. Revere specialized in fitting dentures made of metal and walrus ivory in his patient’s mouths. (There is no record, however, that he ever worked on George Washington’s false teeth.)

The practice of dentistry has come a long way since 1776. But the ideal set of dentures — one that’s both aesthetically pleasing and fully functional — remains a valid goal today. But now, instead of going to a metalworker, you’ll visit a denture specialist: your dentist.

We understand that dentures need to have a perfect, comfortable fit so they can do their work. That’s why we take the time to make an individual mold of your mouth as the first step of the process. Then we choose prosthetic teeth in the shape, size and shade that’s right for you. When everything is satisfactory, the dentures will be custom-fabricated in a dental laboratory using high-quality materials that are lifelike and durable. Finally, we will make sure that your new dentures look, feel and function the way they should.

If you have older dentures that no longer fit as they should, come in to our office for a check-up. It’s sometimes possible to repair or re-line dentures; in other cases, it’s best to have a new set made. Ill-fitting dentures aren’t just uncomfortable — they can also lead to oral infections and nutritional difficulties.

What Florence Henderson Learned From Her Impacted Teeth

March 5, 2015 By thewsi

florence-henderson5 Life lessons are learned in the most surprising places. This is no different for celebrities. Take, for example, Florence Henderson, an actress, singer, philanthropist, author and star of the hit television series, The Brady Bunch. As she told Dear Doctor magazine, her experience with having four impacted wisdom teeth removed — at the same time — “…only made me more aware of how important dental care is.” She continued, “This is why I have always gone every six months for a check up.”

Another important lesson we want to share is the fact that even if your impacted third molars (wisdom teeth) are not bothering you or causing any pain, you may still need to have them removed.

Why? Having a tooth submerged below the gum, pressing on the roots of other teeth is problematic; the tooth should be removed so that you can avoid major dental problems before they occur. For example, it is not uncommon for us to find an impacted third molar pressing against the roots of the adjacent second molar. Furthermore, because the enamel crown of this impacted tooth is trapped below the gum, we sometimes find an infection, gum disease or even cyst formation occurring.

Often, the best time to remove a wisdom tooth is when it is not causing any problems. This is because a painful wisdom tooth or pain in the area of the wisdom tooth may be a sign that significant damage has occurred or is occurring. It is also better to remove wisdom teeth when you are young, as young healthy people with no prior infections at the site provide the best opportunity for us to remove the tooth with no complications.

New Orleans Claim to Dental Invention!

March 5, 2015 By thewsi

orleans Think of New Orleans, Louisiana, and what comes to mind? The sound of jazz pouring out from a nightclub in the French Quarter… the smell of shrimp boiling in a spicy gumbo… the fresh feeling you get after you’ve cleaned between your teeth with dental floss?

You may not know it, but besides its culinary charms and musical mojo, New Orleans has another claim to fame: It’s the historical home of dental floss. In the early 1800’s, a pioneering dentist by the name of Dr. Levi Spear Parmly recommended that his patients clean between their teeth with a silken thread. Long before the role of oral bacteria was recognized, it was Dr. Parmly’s belief that cavities were caused by foreign material on the tooth surfaces. But it took until nearly the end of the century for his invention to become available in handy dispensers. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Today, of course, we know much more about the causes and treatment of tooth decay. For example, we know that harmful bacteria in plaque — the sticky biofilm that builds up on your teeth in the absence of effective cleaning — release chemical substances that erode tooth enamel; this causes cavities (tiny holes in the tooth) to begin forming. We also know that while brushing alone helps remove plaque, it’s far and away more effective when combined with flossing.

Yet there’s one thing we’re still not sure of: Why don’t more people use dental floss regularly? Did you know that with careful attention to your oral hygiene, tooth decay is almost completely preventable? Plus, dental floss is now available in many different varieties: It’s no longer made of silk, but can consist of nylon or gore-tex thread; it comes waxed or unwaxed, round or flat… even flavored like mint or bubble gum!

So here’s our suggestion: Find a style of dental floss you like, picture yourself on Bourbon Street… and spend a few minutes flossing every day. Your teeth will say “merci beaucoup.”

Dr. Booth, Jennifer, Wendy and Linda are all such a wonderful team! They helped to take care of my oldest son with some orthodontics after a serious issue with an Odontoma and have been our regular family dentist for years on end. I wouldn’t trust my teeth to anyone else.Update:I am updating my review. Dr. Booth has retired from The Tooth Booth and left his practice in good hands with Dr. Sileewa. He is a kind, caring dentist who has delivered fantastic work for myself and my family. The hygienists are so nice and really put your mind at ease. I had a filling put in yesterday and my husband spoke to Dr. S. directly about making payments (split in two) so we can use our HSA. He said that would be totally fine. He even offered us a discount. As I was leaving, I spoke to Barb the office manager, and reminded her that we were given the option to make payments as well as offered a discount. I said I would call first thing in the morning (as our HSA would be reloaded) with the first payment. Barb very rudely said she would give me my walking bill and said she was giving us a 5% discount that we were not entitled to as we were not paying in full at one time nor the day of. I reminded her politely (again) that the doctor approved it. Barb decided that she didn't like that correction and proceeded to remind me of the office hours so that she, "Wouldn't have to chase us down for our payments." My husband has been with this office for 30 years. He's been coming since he was a boy and nobody from the office has ever had to chase him down (nor his parents) for non-payment. I felt so embarrassed, humiliated, and quite frankly upset. What an awful comment to make to patients in fantastic standing let alone any client. I left and immediately called my husband. We decided that we would not be taking the discount (since we were not entitled to it) and that we would be leaving the office for good over this. This was not the first, second or even third time I have had an issue with Barb, but it was definitely the last time that I was going to allow her to speak to me in such a way. It is sad for us to move on as we liked Dr. Sileewa and the hygienists. We are sorry to lose them and to have to say goodbye over one person but unfortunately that's sometimes all it takes.

I have been a patient at The Tooth Booth for about 10 years now. While I always thought the prior Dentist did a good job, this new Dentist Dr. Nawar Sileewa has made The Tooth Booth now great! I would highly recommend. They also are very fair priced. While visiting make sure to give Jennifer a hard time. I always do! 🙂

Dr. Booth and his team are fabulous. He is a very knowledgeable Dentist and Orthodontist and takes time to explain what is going on in a manner you can understand and gives you treatment options. I continue to be impressed by his and his team’s level of customer service. From my child’s tooth extraction, teen’s ortho, family dental cleanings, toothaches and Grandma’s crown replacement.. I couldn’t be more pleased with the speed and flexibility of their patient care. I highly recommend Dr. Booth and his team.
