How Cosmetic Dentistry Saved Jerry Rice’s Smile

March 5, 2015 By thewsi

jerry-rice4 As a Pro Football Hall of Famer and first runner up on the hit television show Dancing with the Stars, Jerry Rice has a face and smile that truly has star quality. However, that was not always the case. During an interview with Dear Doctor magazine, the retired NFL pro discussed his good fortune to have had just a few minor dental injuries throughout his football career. He went on to say that his cosmetic dentist repaired several of his chipped teeth with full crowns. Rice now maintains his beautiful smile with routine cleanings and occasional tooth bleaching.

If you have chipped, broken or missing teeth, or are considering a smile makeover, we want to know exactly what you want to change about your smile, as the old adage is true: Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. This is one reason why we feel that listening is one of the most important skills we can use during your private, smile-makeover consultation. We want to use this time to ensure we see what you see as attractive and vice versa so that together we can design a realistic, achievable blueprint for your dream smile.

For this reason, we have put together some questions you should ask yourself prior to your appointment:

  • What do you like and dislike about the color, size, shape and spacing of your teeth?
  • Do you like how much of your teeth show when you smile and when your lips are relaxed?
  • Are you happy with the amount of gum tissue that shows when you smile?
  • Do you prefer a “Hollywood smile” with perfectly aligned, bright white teeth, or do you prefer a more natural looking smile with slight color, shape and shade variations?

Straight Facts About Straightening Teeth — The Science Behind Orthodontics

March 5, 2015 By thewsi

orthodontics Orthodontics is a sub-specialty of dentistry devoted to the study of growth and development of the teeth and jaws and treatment of improper bites (malocclusions).

What causes improper bites?

Malocclusions result from irregularities in the positioning of teeth, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both.

Why have orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment is carried out primarily to improve the alignment and function of your teeth and bite. It also results in improved oral health, easier maintenance, a better smile, and enhanced self-confidence and esteem.

What is the first step?

Schedule an appointment with our office for an orthodontic evaluation of your teeth and jaws and learn what options are best for you.

What do we need in order to plan your orthodontic treatment?

  • Molds (impressions) of your teeth to study your bite (study models).
  • “Articulated models” placing your study models in a machine that replicates jaw movement.
  • Specialized x-rays showing your teeth and how your jaws align.
  • Photographs of your smile and position of your teeth.
  • Computer imaging.

What are braces?

Orthodontic appliances, commonly known as braces, are small brackets that are placed on teeth, through which thin flexible wires are threaded. They are the parts that move the teeth.

How do they work?

The wires tend to straighten out to their undistorted forms moving the teeth with them. Since the tissues that attach the bone to the teeth are living, they are constantly changing and remodeling themselves. Harnessing these natural forces allows the movement of teeth. Light controlled forces acting through the wires cause new bone to be formed as the teeth move into new improved positions.

What are current options for orthodontic appliances?

  • Fixed appliances, traditionally known as braces, include brackets bonded to the teeth. These may be either metal or clear brackets, which are less visible but more susceptible to breakage.
  • Removable appliances, or clear aligners. These consist of a series of computer-generated clear plastic custom fitted trays that progressively move the teeth into better alignment.

Orthodontic treatment is an ingenious scientific discovery that has allowed the dental profession to precisely move teeth for better appearance as well as improved function. It harnesses the body’s natural processes by which tissues normally remodel themselves to maintain a steady state, allowing your dental team to move your teeth into improved position for a lifetime of dental health and a great smile.

Cat Cora’s 6 Ways to Keep Kids Off Junk Food

March 5, 2015 By thewsi

cat-cora6 Junk food and between-meal sweets are a habit for many of us, even though we know it is bad for our bodies and our teeth. As adults, we are responsible for our own choices. As parents, we are also responsible for our children’s choices, and for teaching them to choose wisely.

Celebrity Chef Cat Cora offers the following six suggestions for leading children to a healthy lifestyle. Cora is a star of Iron Chef America and author of Cat Cora’s Classics with a Twist: Fresh Takes on Favorite Dishes, in which she reveals healthier versions of classic recipes. In her remakes she shows how to cook with a lot of flavor while reducing fat and sugar. Cora has four young sons, so her methods are not just theories — they have been practiced in real life.

1. Remember who’s the boss.

“My kids have never had fast food,” Cora said in a recent interview with Dear Doctor magazine. “The parents have a choice to do that or not,” she said. “The kids are not going to the grocery store to shop; the kids are not driving themselves through fast food chains.”

2. Make your rules clear and stick to them.

“Right now my 7-year-old tries to be picky, but it’s really about us being consistent as parents,” Cat said. For example, in her household pizza is served only at the weekly pizza and movie night. The kids get a healthier version of what they want, so they don’t feel deprived. The evening includes air-popped popcorn without butter — and no soda, which is bad for teeth because of its sugar and other chemical ingredients.

3. Offer your children a variety of foods and tastes.

Cora made sure her children tried different foods and spices from infancy, so they are open to trying new things. It’s easier to get all the nutrition you need if you eat a wide variety of foods.

4. Learn to make tasty substitutions for sugar.

When her children were babies, Cora stopped relying on bottles and sippy cups as soon as possible, reducing her children’s likelihood of developing tooth decay due to sugary residues remaining in their mouths. Now that they are older, she uses tasty substitutes for sugar such as fruit purees and the natural sugar substitute Stevia.

5. Include the children in meal planning.

Kids are more likely to eat a meal they are involved in planning and cooking. For example, ask them which vegetable they would like to have (not whether they want to have a vegetable).

6. Model healthy behavior for your kids.

Parents are the best role models. This is true not only for food choices, but also for exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Booth, Jennifer, Wendy and Linda are all such a wonderful team! They helped to take care of my oldest son with some orthodontics after a serious issue with an Odontoma and have been our regular family dentist for years on end. I wouldn’t trust my teeth to anyone else.Update:I am updating my review. Dr. Booth has retired from The Tooth Booth and left his practice in good hands with Dr. Sileewa. He is a kind, caring dentist who has delivered fantastic work for myself and my family. The hygienists are so nice and really put your mind at ease. I had a filling put in yesterday and my husband spoke to Dr. S. directly about making payments (split in two) so we can use our HSA. He said that would be totally fine. He even offered us a discount. As I was leaving, I spoke to Barb the office manager, and reminded her that we were given the option to make payments as well as offered a discount. I said I would call first thing in the morning (as our HSA would be reloaded) with the first payment. Barb very rudely said she would give me my walking bill and said she was giving us a 5% discount that we were not entitled to as we were not paying in full at one time nor the day of. I reminded her politely (again) that the doctor approved it. Barb decided that she didn't like that correction and proceeded to remind me of the office hours so that she, "Wouldn't have to chase us down for our payments." My husband has been with this office for 30 years. He's been coming since he was a boy and nobody from the office has ever had to chase him down (nor his parents) for non-payment. I felt so embarrassed, humiliated, and quite frankly upset. What an awful comment to make to patients in fantastic standing let alone any client. I left and immediately called my husband. We decided that we would not be taking the discount (since we were not entitled to it) and that we would be leaving the office for good over this. This was not the first, second or even third time I have had an issue with Barb, but it was definitely the last time that I was going to allow her to speak to me in such a way. It is sad for us to move on as we liked Dr. Sileewa and the hygienists. We are sorry to lose them and to have to say goodbye over one person but unfortunately that's sometimes all it takes.

I have been a patient at The Tooth Booth for about 10 years now. While I always thought the prior Dentist did a good job, this new Dentist Dr. Nawar Sileewa has made The Tooth Booth now great! I would highly recommend. They also are very fair priced. While visiting make sure to give Jennifer a hard time. I always do! 🙂

Dr. Booth and his team are fabulous. He is a very knowledgeable Dentist and Orthodontist and takes time to explain what is going on in a manner you can understand and gives you treatment options. I continue to be impressed by his and his team’s level of customer service. From my child’s tooth extraction, teen’s ortho, family dental cleanings, toothaches and Grandma’s crown replacement.. I couldn’t be more pleased with the speed and flexibility of their patient care. I highly recommend Dr. Booth and his team.
